Combating poverty in EthiopiaDID YOU KNOW?Ethiopia is listed 170 out of 177 on the Human Poverty index. This index created by the United Nations Development Programme, measures deprivations in the three dimensions - a long and healthy life, knowledge and a decent standard of living. Ahead is a UK-based charity initiating and supporting projects aimed at combating poverty and inequalities in health, education and development in Ethiopia, particularly in the Gujii Zone.Ethiopia's poverty-stricken economy is based on agriculture, accounting for half of GDP, 60% of exports, and 80% of total employment. The agricultural sector suffers from frequent drought and poor cultivation practices. Drought has seriously affected even districts which traditionally were known for their good agricultural produce. Bush fires, which are exacerbated by prolonged droughts, have destroyed the remnants of forests that had survived farming, building and charcoal making. The majority of inhabitants have been experiencing famine for a long time. Now the Ethiopian Government's efforts alone cannot tackle the enormous healthcare, educational and development needs... Your support is crucial to promote healthy communities, widen access to learning and combat poverty in Ethiopia.
